Dog Cruelty - PreventionTips

In the case of dogs, choosing the breed of dog that is right for you is of paramount importance. If you don't, chances are you might be surprised or become regretful when you find yourself ended up with one whose personalities do not work well with yours. This could further lead to one of two possible unintended consequences or actions; you could find yourself engaging in acts of cruelty to the animal or giving up the dog for adoption.

Animals are no way different from us human, when it comes to the pain they are left to endure from being abandoned, neglected and mistreated. The only difference is that they are unable to verbalize it. Just like us, they do have needs, such as need to be sheltered, protected, loved and care for.

Again, just like us human, they do have differences in personalities, yet they all serve their different and important purposes. For examples, some dogs were selectively bred to be industrious, but may also serve the purpose of pets. In the case of working dogs they are the guard and draft workers, originally bred to work alongside their masters.

They have been used as sled dogs, guarding and protective dogs for livestock and people, and also for the purpose of guiding and rescuing. These dogs are rather territorial, strong and confident and thus require a similarly strong-willed master. This group consist of the larger breeds of dogs. Although they were bred to work alongside human, they are usually good pets, being fiercely loyal, obedient and intelligent. However, for some, their size and protective instincts require careful consideration.

So as to protect yourself from being a perpetrator of Animal Abuse, in the case of dogs, it's equally important that you know your personalities as much as you know those of the dog you are about to take home. Knowing the personalities of that breed of dog you fell in love with is very important. Choosing a dog to some extend is like choosing a mate; you have to go for one that compliments your personalities; in other words, you both have to have a lot in common! Below are some common personalities of dogs.

  • bouncy or laid-back
  • energetic or non-energetic
  • friendly or unfriendly
  • playful or non-playful
  • highly motivated
  • intelligent or unintelligent
  • good city dog

Secondly, you should also be aware of the habits to be expected and be willing to implement proper training where necessary so as to change or curb those habits that can be change and be willing to accept habits that will never change. For example, these are some possible long lasting behaviors or habits of some breeds of dogs that you might find rather annoying.

  • Constantly urinating around the house
  • Defecating around the house
  • Constantly barking at nights
  • Chewing on items around the house
  • Biting people during playing

The above actions, however, can be easily resolved with proper training. There are several books, and online materials that are available to help you with these tasks. If you are an impatient person, or don't have the time to train your dog, you might want to pay a fee to get these services performed by an expert in this field. Whatever you do, please remember not to take your frustration out on the animal. It's better to take your dog to a dog shelter, instead of engaging in any form of cruelty to animal. Remember animal rights!
